Women, Jewish Prayers and Ritual Observance: An Exploration of Halakhah (Jewish Law) and Egalitarianism.
Taught by Rabbi Adam Rubin (via Zoom)

While SZBE is egalitarian in its religious approach, this commitment does not extend to every aspect of prayer and ritual. Over three Thursday evenings on Zoom, this course will explore teshuvot (legal “responsa” literature) from within the Conservative Movement that grapple with the following questions: Can daughters of Kohanim/Levi’im be called to the Torah as a “Bat Kohen” or “Bat Levi?” Should our female ancestors (Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah) be included in the first blessing of the Amidah, along with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and if so, is this inclusion mandatory? Are women obligated to put on tefillin every day, as men are? If so – why do most women in Conservative synagogues choose not to do so? The goal of the course is to understand how halakhic debates on contentious issues are framed and seek solutions to difficult dilemmas – and how one religious tradition can contain multiple perspectives.
